  • No, they are not. As a military man (I assume from your name), you should be aware that an assault rifle is a select fire (i.e. full auto or burst) rifle firing an intermediate cartridge, i.e. between a full battle rifle round and a sub-machine gun.

  • Considering they couldn't keep track of a bunch of sales they knew were straw purchases, how the heck are they supposed to keep track of 18,000 reported "remotely possible" straw purchases? Sigh... more bureaucracy, no impact on crime, more infringements to come.

  • Wives, the problem isnt that the investigation was bungled... the problem is that it apparently was designed to fail. According to another MSN article, agents involved in the investigation said they were ordered to let the guns walk, but never given any means to track the arms.

  • JWNam, sorry.. but an Ak or AR15 is not "high powered". In fact the AR was for a long time derided as a "toy", the "Mattel" rifle, or the "mouse gun". Compared to an M1 Garand firing a .30-06 or an M1A firing .308 a .223 (5.56 nato) Ar 15 is relatively underpowered.

  • Jacob, you know not of what you speak. There is no difference in "power" between the rifles pictured and your average hunting rifle. The differences are cosmetic. A hunting rifle firing 7mm remington magnum is more "powerful" than an AK clone firing 7.62x39mm.

  • What this story and EVERY story on this issue fails to address is that there is no definition of an "assault weapon" that is currently valid at the Federal level.  The Federal Assault Weapon ban expired. The definition under that ban is no longer valid.
